The 13th century represented a key period for the development and the rise of polyphony in the West. Motet, which means the addition of new voices on a pre-existing Gregorian melody, became a real must to explore new composition techniques and counterpointistic formulas. But above all, the motet offered a structural support that allowed to combine sacrality with profanity, literality with allegory, text with metatext. Therefore, plain songs merge with love poems, often with two or three different accounts superimposed in Latin and vernacular languages, forming combinations between reality and metaphor. La Flor en Paradís presents a thorough selection of motets that were written between 1250 and 1300.
