Located in La Cerdanya, it resulted from the fusion of two former municipalities: Urtx and Queixans. The villages that are now part of it are: Urtx, Queixans, Estoll, Soriguera, Les Pereres, el Vilar d’Urtx and Escadarchs. It is characterized by its great number of Romanesque style churches, such as the church of Sant Martí d’Urtx and the one of Sant Miquel de Soriguerola, the latter one dating from the 11th century and where the Taula de Sant Miquel was found (an artwork painted on wood, now deposited in the MNAC [the Catalan National Art Museum]). Another two examples are Sant Esteve de les Pereres and Santa Eulàlia d’Estoll (which was overhauled in the 13th and the 17th centuries). Aside from the wide Romanesque heritage, this municipality presents a natural area surrounded by forests and with amazing views. Josep Pla defined it as “the most grinning side of La Cerdanya”. In Fontanals de Cerdanya not only the gastronomic potential of the area stands out, but it is also the perfect place for practising outdoor sports.
