Opera was a very popular genre in 18th-century England. To such an extent that after a show, the most popular arias would be arranged for small instrumentals ensembles in order to be performed in a simpler way. According to the manuscripts on the arrangements of Händel’s operas, the part of the voice was performed by the viola de gamba. Actually, many composers considered this instrument as the most similar to the human voice. “The only difference is that it cannot produce words”, wrote Jean Rousseau in Traité de la viole (1687). Brezza offers a new version of the wonderfully famous Rinaldo opera based on personal arrangements inspired by the period manuscripts.
