Works by J. I d’Habsburg, G. Porsile, A. Caldara, F. B. Conti and anonymous artists.
The chalumeau is a curious velvety-timbered instrument that looks like a recorder but that has a reed on the top. Although it is quite unknown nowadays, it used to delight the audiences in the 18th century. To such an extent that some composers such as Telemann, Caldara, Vivaldi and Conti composed some works specifically for chalumeau, generally in the format of a gorgeous dialogue with human voice. Emperor Joseph I from Habsburg even wrote an aria for soprano and chalumeau as a birthday present for his wife which was included in the opera Chilonida, by master M. Antonio Ziani. Harmonia del Parnàs invite you to enjoy a repertoire that explores a unique sound that combines chalumeau and voice and takes you through the few baroque compositions that were written for this instrument.
